Canada has long been a popular choice for many students while choosing a country to study abroad. However, a shift is underway, and many students are now choosing Ireland over Canada. Let’s explain the scenario using an example of Arjun who had been planning for Canada for two years.
Paper-wise, all was fine for Arjun. His IELTS was sorted at 6.5, he knew his family had saved the money years ago. Accommodation, which troubles most students to sleep peacefully, was not going to be a problem at all, his older brother had moved to Brampton a while back and got himself settled with a room ready for him. Canada was never an option for Arjun. It was a matter of inheritance for him, taking the same route as his brother.
However, come January 2026, he found himself sitting for a free counselling session at Studyroute AI. He was completely sure of his decision to go to Canada. Ninety minutes later, he left the counselling room having thought of everything differently, not because someone was dissuading him of his choice, but because the figures he saw no longer added up to the plan he inherited.
Arjun still wanted to do a business-related master's, being a natural step to take following a BCom. He now began asking himself about where he could take the most advantage of his chosen field. By February he was on the process of applying to do an MSc International Business in one year, at University
The Canada His Brother Knew No Longer Exists
Studying in Canada in 2021 was completely different than it was in 2025!
In 2021, the actual process for obtaining a study permit was relatively simple with the easy approval of study permits already submitted for all students who qualified through the Student Direct Stream (a type of global express service). Not only did students from India get their applications processed much faster because they were priority applicants under the Student Direct Stream, but also they would transition directly to permanent residency in Canada through the Post-Graduation Work Permit after completing their studies.
However, by November of 2024, when Arjun was going to apply to Canada to study (in 2025), the policies on how to apply for a study permit in Canada were significantly different.
On November 30th, 2024, Canada announced that the Student Direct Stream would be cancelled for all countries. As such, everyone would now have to apply using the same application processing standard and would be subject to much longer processing times, more documents will be required in support of your application, and even more applicant discretion will be applied once your application has been submitted.
The biggest change was in the approvals. Refusal rates for student permit applications from India were about 32% in August 2023 and had increased to about 74% by August 2025 with estimates suggesting they could reach as high as 80% for the full year. So the odds of an Indian student being granted an approval went from "Most likely to approve" to "Most likely to be denied" over the course of almost two years. The number of Indian students coming to Canada overall was also declining. Indian students comprised over 50% of the total international student population in 2023; by late 2025 this figure had dropped to less than 10%.
In addition, there are even fewer exemptions from this limitation. Canada has a target of processing 408,000 permits of this type; however, there will only be 155,000 permits given to new arrivals and all remaining permits will be allocated to individuals already living in the country. Overall these numbers represent a plan that is 7% lower than the previous plan for 2025 and 16% lower than the 2024 plan; as a result, new international admissions have dropped, likely by nearly 50%. Applicants outside of masters and doctoral programs must now apply for a Provincial Attestation Letter.
"My brother kept telling me Canada is fine, just apply. When I actually saw the rejection numbers for this year, it felt like he was giving me advice from a completely different era."
Why Ireland Fit His Profile, Not Just His Mood
At studyroute, we don’t have any favourite countries. Based on the current guidelines of the student who appears among us, we help him/her apply to their selected countries and universities and offer our honest opinion about the prospects. In the case of Arjun, a 23-year-old graduate of BCom, scoring 6.5 in IELTS and having a career interest in business and finance, the choice came down to Ireland.
The visa actually gets approved
A very successful rate for Indian Students' visas from Ireland is nearly 95%; this does not have any quotas that apply based on the Country of origin. The view concerning the whole process changed once; he had one factor by which he could expect to be found eligible and prepared himself to expect to receive an approval rather than preparing for the inevitable rejection from Ireland's immigration authorities. Most of the rejections that occur in Ireland are due to avoidable errors that could be corrected, and as such, lack the funds to prove intent to enter Ireland or to finance his education, or are incomplete and therefore not acceptable documents for an education certificate.
One focused year instead of two
Most master's programs in Ireland usually take about twelve months to complete. This masters program in Dublin will be completed within one year only. In comparison to a similar business masters in Canada, it would be more likely to span over a period of eighteen to twenty-four months. The duration of one year is more beneficial in terms of lower tuition fee costs, quicker entry into the labor market, and faster job search after graduating.
Two years to work afterwards, with no field restrictions
And it is here where a true comparison should be made, since the previous version of this comparison is outdated. A master's degree in Canada, whether MBA or business master’s, is eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit as well. The field-of-study requirement introduced in 2024 for Canada and causing anxiety affects diplomas and certificates, but not degrees. Hence, Arjun wouldn’t face difficulties receiving a PGWP due to his chosen course of study.
The key difference lies in its form. Ireland's Third Level Graduate Programm provides a stamp 1G visa to masters (NFQ Level 9) for two years without needing to get sponsored by an employer and earn a certain salary during that time. It allows moving freely in all sectors.
A pathway you can plan, not a points race
The immigration path of Canada to Permanent Residency mainly relies on the Express Entry process, which is a point-based system in which you get points based on factors such as language skills, education level, work experience, age, and provincial nomination, where there are cutoff scores for each draw conducted. Ireland does not involve any point system. The critical thing to consider after your education is whether you have gotten an actual job and acquired the qualification. The possibility of obtaining long-term residency and subsequently becoming a citizen comes after five years of reckonable residence, whereby reckoning begins from the year you obtained employment stamps after studies.
The employers are genuinely there
Dublin is not a destination where you can think about getting your work sorted out later. From companies such as Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Pfizer, and many others to global banks and fintech firms, the Europeans headquarters of these big multinational companies are based in Dublin. The financial services hub in Dublin is a true job market for those who specialize in business and finance, rather than just a marketing gimmick.
Ireland vs Canada in 2026: The Numbers Side by Side
Here is a factual comparison based on current 2026 policy. Figures are drawn from government announcements and verified education reporting published between late 2025 and mid-2026.
In 2026, Ireland offers a more straightforward study pathway for many Indian students, with visa approval rates of around 95% for well-prepared applications and no national cap on student permits. Canada, by comparison, has approval rates of roughly 20% to 26% and limits new study permits to about 155,000 arrivals. Ireland's one-year master's programmes, lower tuition costs of €10,000 to €25,000 per year, and simpler residency pathway make it an attractive option. Canada still provides a longer post-study work permit of up to three years, but higher financial requirements, increased visa refusals, and a competitive points-based immigration system have made the process more challenging for international students.
What Actually Happened After He Switched
Following his counseling session, Arjun studied on his own and returned after two weeks with much better questions, which is precisely what we want to see from students. Within January 2026, he shortlisted three QS ranked Irish universities offering a one-year Master's in Business program in his budget range, namely UCD, DCU, and the University of Galway at a tuition cost ranging between roughly €14,000 and €18,000.
By February, he had received admissions within one week. He accepted UCD's offer, deposited his tuition, and applied for his long stay 'D' student visa through the AVATS portal by submitting the necessary documents for proving that he has the funds for living in Ireland.
"I had been stressing about Canada for two years and got nowhere. The Ireland process took about three months from start to visa. I just wish someone had put this data in front of me earlier."
What Does It Actually Cost to Study in Ireland?
Myth number one that students hold is that studying in Ireland is expensive. The tuition fees for an international postgraduate in Ireland range between €10,000 and €25,000. The cost of living is estimated to be approximately €10,000 to €15,000 in Dublin and relatively lower in Galway, Cork, or Limerick.
The difference in the time frame is what changes everything in its entirety. For instance, if Arjun pays approximately €14,500 in tuition fees together with a living expense of about €12,000 per year, the total cost will add up to approximately €26,500, which is equal to about 24-25 lakh rupees at the current rate of exchange. In comparison, a two-year business master's in Canada will amount to much higher tuition fees plus the second year's living expenses.
Students should not rule out scholarship applications either. The scholarship offered by the Government of Ireland for International Education is comprehensive and offers a living allowance plus tuition fees for only one year, and can be taken by students in any discipline but is extremely competitive. Scholarships available from the Universities in UCD, TCD, and NUIG may help offset tuition fees by several thousands.
Questions Students Ask Us Most About Ireland
Do I need IELTS to study in Ireland?
Certainly. Most Irish universities require an overall IELTS score of 6.0, while competitive postgraduate programs in UCD and Trinity College normally require 6.5. The PTE Academic and TOEFL tests are also acceptable, although the PTE test is gaining more popularity among Indians since the results are announced quicker.
How much money do I need to show for the Irish student visa?
Currently, you will be required to prove availability of funds of at least €10,000 to cover living expenses in your first year, and you should have made at least €6,000 payment, or 50 percent of tuition fee, whichever is more. It is usually recommended to keep a few hundred more than the required amount as a cushion. It has to appear genuine over a period of approximately six months, hence an excessive deposit just before the application date becomes one of the most common rejection reasons.
Can I work while studying?
Certainly. Students who have an Irish study visa are allowed to work 20 hours a week while classes are in session and 40 hours a week during holidays. If we consider the 2026 minimum wage which is €14.15 per hour, then working is useful to ease the cost of living.
What happens after I graduate?
Stamp 1G eligibility is available to graduates with a master's degree and allows up to 24 months of stay and employment across all sectors with no need for employer support. From here, the time spent with your employment stamps contributes towards residency requirements, and within five years, you qualify for consideration under settled status, without a point-based requirement.
Is Ireland only good for technology students?
Nonsense. Ireland excels in technology, data, pharmaceuticals, finance, engineering and medicine because this is where multinational companies establish their European headquarters; however, people who have studied business, finance, management and marketing can also have success in Ireland, especially in the financial services industry in Dublin. The reality of the situation applies to every nation in the world: research your job prospects first!
So Was Ireland Really the Better Choice for Arjun?
Canada has some unique advantages that are still present today and should be recognized accordingly. In Canada, obtaining a master's or MBA degree will allow you to apply for a PGWP visa which allows you to work in Canada for a maximum of three years, which is longer than the maximum length of the Irish equivalent of this permit (which is two years). In addition, Canada has a structured path to permanent residency from studying; there is a very large Indian community that has lived in Canada for many years; and there is an established settlement infrastructure. If someone were to have family connections in Canada, then they could certainly consider Canada as a viable option
However, this did not mean that the decision that Arjun was making was isolated in nature. Rather, he was basing his decision on relative risks of probabilities. When we examine the factors that will determine Arjun's success in obtaining his visa in 2026, we see that the calculation comes down to an extremely one-sided situation: 95% chance of being approved versus 25% chance for an Indian applying to Canada; one year to have to wait for the visa versus two years; lowest overall costs; guaranteed employment and whether or not he is going to be subject to a competitive process; and there is an opportunity to have a residency because of a plan, not competition. The factor that most attracted Arjun to Canada was that his brother lived there. Even though this was the factor that most attracted him to Canada, it did not relate to his probability of being granted a visa.
Start From Where the Numbers Actually Are
Each case is unique and personal. The best country will depend upon your educational history, your professional aims, your finances, and how things look for your profile right now based on immigration figures, not how they looked back when your brother/sister/friend did their immigration a few years ago.
This is exactly where Studyroute comes in to save the day. We will take your specific profile into account, analyze how far it goes on a scale of 2026 criteria in each country, and then give you an idea, face-to-face, about which choice would be optimal for you to make.
